Privacy policy for Scrattle
Last updated: 11 October 2026 · Norsk
Scrattle is a word game: everyone gets the same rare word, makes up a definition, and votes for the one they think is real. The app is published by Studio Glazebrook. It requires no login, no email address and no phone number – we collect what the game needs to work, and nothing more.

What we store, and why
- Anonymous user ID. A random ID is created the first time you open the app. It ties your username, rating and friends together so you remain the same player next time. The ID is also kept in the iPhone keychain, so you keep your profile if you delete and reinstall the app.
- Username. The name you choose is shown to other players in games and on the leaderboard. You have one username per language league.
- Rating and game statistics. Points, rating, number of rounds and when you last played – for the leaderboard and to match you with players at your level.
- Game content. The definitions you write, your votes, the rooms you join, and messages you write in a game's chat. This is needed to run the game and to remove objectionable content.
- Typing rhythm. How long you waited before you started typing and how long you typed. It is used to make computer players behave like people.
- Friends. Who you are friends with, friend requests and your friend code, so you can find each other and play together.
- Push notifications (optional). If you turn on notifications, a notification token from Apple is stored so you can be told when a friend starts a game or invites you. We never send advertising as notifications.
- Word usage. Which words have been played, so you don't get the same words again.
Your answers may be reused by computer players
When an open game is short of players, the empty seats are filled by computer-controlled players (bots). Bots may use definitions written earlier by real players. An answer is only reused after we have approved it manually, and your name is never shown when a bot uses it. The answer is still stored together with the name you played under, so we can remove content from users who break the terms. If you don't want your answers reused, or want them deleted, write to us.
What we don't collect
No name other than the username you choose, no email, phone number, location, contacts, photos or payment details. The app has no ads, no analytics tools and does not track you across other apps or websites.
Legal basis
- Contract (GDPR Art. 6(1)(b)): providing the game you have chosen to use – profile, rating, games, friends and chat.
- Legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f)): moderation and abuse prevention, and making computer players behave realistically.
- Consent (Art. 6(1)(a)): push notifications. You can withdraw consent at any time in the iPhone settings.
Who processes data for us
| Provider | Purpose | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase Inc. | Database and sign-in for the anonymous ID | London, United Kingdom |
| Expo (650 Industries Inc.) | Relaying push notifications and delivering app updates | USA |
| Apple Inc. | Delivering push notifications (APNs) and the App Store | USA / EU |
The United Kingdom is covered by an adequacy decision from the European Commission. Transfers to the USA rely on the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and/or the Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses. We do not sell data or share it with anyone else.
How long we keep data
- Profile, rating and friends: until you ask us to delete them.
- Rooms, answers, votes and chat: these are not deleted automatically today. Before Scrattle launches on the App Store we will introduce automatic deletion after 30 days and update this page.
- Notification token: until you turn off notifications, delete your profile, or the token stops working.
- Approved answers used by computer players: until deleted. They are shown without a name.
How to have your data deleted
Write to [email protected] with your username and the language you play in. We will delete your profile, username, rating, friends list, notification token and your answers, normally within 30 days. A button to delete your profile directly in the app is coming.
Note: because the ID is kept in the iPhone keychain, it does not disappear just by deleting the app. Once we delete your profile, the ID stops working and the app creates a new one next time it opens.
Age
Scrattle is for users aged 13 and over. If we learn that a user is younger, we delete the profile.
Your rights
You have the right to access the data we hold about you, and to have it corrected, deleted or provided in a machine-readable format. You can also object to or ask us to restrict processing. Write to us and we will reply within 30 days. If you believe we are not handling your data correctly, you can complain to the Norwegian Data Protection Authority, Datatilsynet, or the authority where you live.
Security
All traffic between the app and the servers is encrypted (HTTPS). Before the App Store launch we are tightening database access so that each user can only change their own data.
Changes
If we change what the app collects – for example if we introduce advertising later – we will update this page and the date at the top before the change takes effect, and ask for consent where the law requires it.
